Technology trends tend to change on a dime, but ageism appears to be here to stay. Industry workers over the age of 35 are beginning to worry about their job security as the field gets younger and younger. These concerns seem to be validated by the numbers that show a drastic rise in the hiring of millennials.
Ageism Across The Field
Mark Zuckerberg is the key figure to point to when wondering why most companies prefer to hire younger workers. Zuckerberg was a college student at Harvard when he launched Facebook. The site eventually reached one billion users when the California native was just 28-years-old. Most companies have followed in Zuckerberg’s footsteps ever since. Evan Spiegel is the CEO of SnapChat – he’s also just 27-years-old. He became the youngest billionaire in the world in 2015 while playing in technology, a true young man’s game.
More young people means less of the older generation. Silicon Valley has always been viewed as an area dominated by recent college graduates. But, the ageism seems to be more widespread than that as more and more 35-plus workers find themselves on the outside looking in. Lawsuits citing ageism are becoming more common the industry as well. Will the lawsuits change the hiring process or further shun the middle-agers from the tech industry?

Google – 30 years old
Amazon – 30 years old
Facebook – 29 years old
The research compiled in 2017 shows that in addition to being young, these employees generally average about five years of total work experience. Two years with the same company is also on the higher side for these younger employees. There are many reasons why a technology leader would target a millennial rather than a middle-aged worker. The biggest factor just may be the difference in salary. Most workers over the age of 45 will likely demand a six-figure salary, while millennials with virtually zero work experience cannot expect the same type of compensation.
