Smart speakers have quickly become the hottest technology on the market in 2017. As users continue to shift from Siri to Alexa, it is important to understand the capabilities of these artificial intelligence devices. The Amazon Echo has proven to go above and beyond its intended functions in order to provide a safe environment for its owners.
There have been significant advancements made in home security over the last 20 years. Individuals can set up video cameras, motion detectors, fingerprint entry pads, and more. All these bells and whistles can be extremely useful in preventing outside intruders from damaging or entering your home, but how can they protect you from the people you’re closest to?
Security Is Not Just For Strangers
Most people obviously don’t expect to get into an altercation with a loved one or an acquaintance; otherwise, they wouldn’t put themselves into a situation where it could happen. Nevertheless, it is something that men and women deal with on a daily basis. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. How can technology step in and help those in need?
Alexa To The Rescue
Last week, a couple was house-sitting in Tejaras, New Mexico, when an argument broke out. The altercation became physical to the point where Eduardo Barros, the boyfriend and a felon, threatened his girlfriend with a gun. Barros threatened to kill the woman in front of her daughter, who was also present at the time.
Little did Barros know, Amazon Echo was wired throughout the house as a surround system. During the dispute, he asked his girlfriend, “did you call the Sheriffs?” The Amazon Echo understood the comments as a request and proceeded to call 9-1-1. The police arrived shortly after and were able to safely remove the woman and child from the harmful situation, proving that smart speakers can provide more than entertainment and information.
There have been plenty of questions and concerns about smart speakers and the rise of artificial intelligence, but it is hard to argue against the value of having an interactive security system available at all times within your home. Home security wasn’t even the Echo’s intended use, and it has already saved lives. Can you imagine how many more could be saved if this technology was used for protection purposes?
